The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe has declared the workshop on Professional Development for Educators open in Delta state, as part of the Niger Delta developmental project.
The representative of the Minister, Director, Community and Youth Development of the Ministry, Augustina Ediae,at a press conference on Wednesday 11,August,2010,in Abuja, told journalists that the workshop was organised by the Ministry because of the declining standard of education, the poor quality of our teachers and the need to salvage this declining standard in our educational system as well as improve on the quality of our teachers particularly in Delta state and Nigeria in general.
The Ministry had trained over 500 teachers in new professional techniques in Delta State covering 15 Local Government areas of Uvwie, Okpe, Udu, Warri-South, sapele, Burutu, Udokwa-West & East, Ughelli North & South amongst others.
The training commenced Monday, August 2nd and ended August 5th, 2010 in two separate Centres, our Ladys High School, Effurun and Government Secondary School, Bomadi.
Orubebe explained that the professional Development for Educators was an initiative of a Delta State born Nigerian living in Canada, Elo Aghogho Olalekan of Calgary Board of Education, Alberta, Canada, an expert in Professional Development for Educators.
He noted that Elo, who was the Resource Person at the workshop, was among the numerous Nigerians who met with him in Canada during an official trip at the instance of late President Umaru Musa YarAdua.
He said, Elo drew his attention to the need of training Nigerian teachers on the latest professional techniques in order to improve and raise the declining standard of education in Nigeria,pointing out that, the Ministrys sole responsibility to train the teachers was to further demonstrate the Ministry keen interest to improve the lives of our children in our schools across the length and breadth of our dear country.
According to the Minister, teachers hold the key to positive change in any society as moulders of characters and shapers of attitudes, skills and competencies; they are the greatest agents of change in our society.
